Lakeland and Athabasca University reaffirm partnership

Lakeland College students can continue to further their education with access to university-level study from Athabasca University.

The post-secondary institutions recently reaffirmed their 13-year educational partnership to work collaboratively to assist students in completing an Athabasca University degree at Lakeland.

“We’re pleased to partner with Athabasca University and provide this value-added opportunity to our students,” says Brad Onofrychuk, dean of Lakeland’s School of Business and Continuing Education. “This transfer agreement offers a unique educational pathway for our students to achieve their goals and take charge of their future.”

Thanks to Lakeland’s partnership with Athabasca University, students can complete a bachelor of commerce or bachelor of management degree in two years after taking the college’s business administration diploma program. After transferring their Lakeland credits, students take university-level courses to achieve thgraduates with cap, tassle and hoodseir degree of choice. Courses are offered primarily online although there are some face-to-face courses offered at the Lloydminster campus.

“The Lakeland College – Athabasca University partnership is a great example of two Alberta post-secondary institutions working together to provide business education for Alberta students,” says Dr. Deborah Hurst, dean of Athabasca University’s Faculty of Business. “We are confident in the high quality education provided by Lakeland College and look forward to supporting the students who take advantage of this unique collaboration.”

Starting this fall, Lakeland will offer four new transferable business courses for students to take at the Lloydminster campus. The courses are International Business, The Changing Global Economy, Fundamentals of Financial Planning, and Marketing Strategy.

Currently, there are 40 students enrolled in an Athabasca University degree program at Lakeland’s Lloydminster campus. Since the collaboration began, about 230 students have taken courses towards an Athabasca University business degree at Lakeland.

Lakeland’s business department offers two one-year certificate programs – accounting technician and administrative professional – and a two-year business administration diploma, which features five majors: accounting, general business, marketing, real estate appraisal and assessment, and small business and entrepreneurship. With Lakeland’s business academic advisor, students have access to one-on-one assistance to achieve their goals.
