“We are honoured to receive this award. I know how hard our team works to ensure our students are able to excel with Lakeland’s student leadership advantage which is why we are dedicated to giving our employees opportunities to grow and develop,” says Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president of Lakeland College.
“On behalf of Lakeland’s senior leadership team and board of governors, I’d like to thank and congratulate our incredible team. They are engaged, committed to a positive work environment and passionate about what they do. It’s a pleasure to work alongside them.”
Lakeland is one of only five post-secondary institutions to receive this accolade for 2017.
Alberta's Top Employers is a competition that recognizes employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work. Employers are evaluated using eight criteria: physical workplace; work atmosphere and social; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement. Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs.
Judges of Alberta’s Top Employers highlighted several reasons for selecting Lakeland, including:
- Ongoing employee development with subsidies for tuition and professional accreditation;
- On-site amenities, including a cafeteria, a quiet room for meditation and religious observance, an employee lounge and a state-of-the-art fitness facility, featuring instructor-led classes, an indoor pool, a climbing wall, and squash and racquetball courts; and
- Maternity leave top-up payments (to 95 per cent of salary for up to 12 weeks), the option to extend their leave into an unpaid leave of absence, and the convenience of onsite daycare for when employees are ready to return to work.
In 2016, Lakeland received an Award of Excellence for leadership development from the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics. “Our focus on providing opportunities for students and staff to develop leadership skills sets us apart as an educator and an employer,” says Wainwright-Stewart.
Established in 1913, Lakeland College has 326 full-time staff in Canada. Lakeland’s executive team is 75 per cent female. The average age of employees is 46. Seventy jobs were available last year at Lakeland.
Lakeland College is a place of possibility that serves more than 8,300 students every year at its campuses in Vermilion, Alta., and Lloydminster, Alta./Sask., and through online and off-site programs and courses.
First published in 2006, Alberta's Top Employers is a competition organized by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers.
