4th Class Power Engineering Steam Lab

Get accredited steam time at the 4th Class Steam Lab located in Lloydminster at Lakeland College.

About the course

This 200 hour course is a combination of hands on training as well as submitted assignments to be completed on site during lab hours. 

Lakeland's steam lab is approved  by the Alberta Boiler Safety (ABSA) and Technical Safety Association of Saskatchewan (TSASK) as meeting the firing time requirement and practical experience to write the Alberta or Saskatchewan Power Engineering 4th Class Part B examination.

The course is a pass/fail. You must complete all of the following:
  • 200 hours in the Lakeland College steam lab
  • A positive evaluation report from the Lakeland College acting steam chief
  • A report/essay which details acquired skills and knowledge, safety practices observed, listing of equipment and/or processes operated, pressures, temperatures, capacities, duties and other activities pertinent to the steam lab
  • A schematic and straight line drawing of relevant system(s) chosen by the instructor

Intake Options

Each option is 200 hours of accredited steam time. See the dates listed below.
  1. Summer Lab option - 5 weeks/5 days per week/8 hours per day. Choose one of 4 intakes each summer.
  2. Evening Lab option - 10 weeks/5 days per week /4 hours per day. Labs run Monday to Friday from 6 - 10 pm.
Note: Lakeland College reserves the right to cancel if enrolment number are low.

Personal Protective Equipment(PPE)

Personal protective equipment is required in the lab. This includes:
  • CSA approved hard hat
  • CSA approved safety glasses with side shields
  • Long sleeve cotton shirt and pants, or CSA fire retardant coveralls (no hoodies)
  • CSA steel toed boots
  • Leather work gloves

Do I need any supplies besides personal protective equipment?
Yes. Bring loose leaf paper and a 2 in. binder. Pen and pencil.

What if I miss a lab?

Make up hours will be charged at $200/hr up to $1,000/day for up to 36 hours total. If you miss more than 36 hours total, you'd be given a fail grade.

Where do I stay while taking the steam lab course?
If you are coming for 4 weeks in the summer, residence rooms are available. Please call the Lloydminster residence office at 780 871 5414.

Note:
  • Registration is now open.
  • Full payment is due when you registration. 
  • First come, first paid registered. If the class is full, you will be held for the next available class.
  • You will be asked to provide proof of completion of  a post-secondary power engineering  course (minimum Part A).
  • Lakeland College reserves the right to cancel if enrolment numbers are low.

Refund Policy:
You will be eligible for a full refund less a $500 administration fee if you withdraw 60 days before the course start date. If you withdraw up to 30 days before the start date, you will be eligible for a refund of $2,500. No refund thereafter.
