fire process heater operator looks at gaugesLakeland College, through partnership with Keyera, is now offering a Fired Process Heater Operator course online.

The Fired Process Heater Operator certificate of competency includes updated certification requirements developed by industry and government in Alberta [See the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) for the Fired Process Heater Operator regulation.]

This certification will allow you to supervise:
  • a power plant that uses thermal liquid under pressure of a blanketing gas not exceeding 700 kPa between 20kW to unlimited kW,
  • a power plant that does not produce steam and that uses thermal liquid under pressure of a blanketing gas not exceeding 700 kPa or a water-glycol mixture with a minimum of 40% glycol between 20kW to unlimited kW
  • a thermal liquid heating system plant between 250 kW to unlimited kW

Note: ABSA requires students to take an approved course before challenging its certification exam. Lakeland College's course is approved.

  • 30 modules including basic math, elementary thermodynamics, combustion, legislation, piping and valves, thermal liquid heading systems, fired heater parts and fittings, operation, safety , and pressure, temperature, flow and level measurement.

  • 1 midterm
  • 1 final examination.

This course includes online lectures, quizzes, tests, mid terms, discussion groups and peer support. You will interact with classmates and your instructor.

High speed internet is recommended, as is using either Firefox or Chrome browsers for the best user experience.

You should:
  • have access to a computer and high speed internet
  • have computer and web skills in order to do course work
  • read and write in English as all of our courses are conducted in English
