Well Site Supervisor

Over the past several years, industry identified that a method to evaluate and validate wellsite supervisor competency was needed. During the past three years industry subject matter experts have worked with Lakeland College to develop a way to enhance, assess and validate the competency of wellsite supervisors.

The objectives of these efforts are to:

  •  Improve the safety and quality of onsite operations
  •  Provide consistent, industry wide, easily accessible, competency validation process that promotes continuous learning.
  •  Allow easier movement or supervisors among operators by having a baseline of competency throughout the industry.
  • More completely meet the spirit and intent IRP 7

Within the Wellsite Supervisor program, there are two certificates: Drilling Supervisor and Completions Supervisor.

This is a competency based program through Lakeland College’s interactive Learning management system, Desire2Learn.  

Your knowledge will be tested in:

  • Leadership, Personal and Business Skills
  • Heath, Safety and Environment Skills
  • Drilling Operations and/or Completion and Well servicing Operations
  • A strong component of regulatory and IRP Awareness is throughout the modules
Competency Based Program 3 Step Process

1. Knowledge Review and Self Assessment

a.       Review topics related to competency statements

b.      Optional self assessment (Quiz preparation; added leverage for success)

2. Quiz

a.       Complete time monitored quiz related to competency statements

b.      90% pass required

3. Validation

a.      Request Manual Assessment (on site validation) with the Master Validator

b.      Master Validator will schedule appropriate date and location


Upon successful completion of all required program requirements:
  • a completion letter will be sent to the email on file
  • the original letter will mailed to address on file
  • a certificate of completion will be issued

Drilling Wellsite Supervisors manage drilling well operations at the work site to  achieve the work goals planned by the Prime Contractor, ensuring the work is performed safely and efficiently in compliance with all applicable legislation and requirement. Additional responsibilities include: site management, daily reporting, cost tracking, ordering materials and services, project execution, improving productivity and creating efficiencies.

Completions Wellsite Supervisors manage completions and well operations at the work site to achieve the work goals planned by the Prime Contractor, ensuring the work is performed safely and efficiently in compliance with all applicable legislation. The guidelines with respect to what is considered applicable experience are:

  • Resume demonstrating 5 years of experience, directly related to wellsite supervisor completions and /or drilling or 1 year (250 onsite  working days) of well site supervisor experience with 9 additional years of oilfield experience approved by the Master Validator.
  • Leadership and business experience required.
  • Letter of reference from a previous employer addressing 5 years of directly related  wellsite supervisory. leadership and business experience.

Annual fee  $175

Annual Fee

An annual fee will be charged directly to the certificate holder. The certificate holder is responsible for maintaining the certificate on annual basis. An email will be sent prior to the annual expiration as a reminder and will include instruction on how to renew. If not renewed the certificate will lapse and the registrant will be required to enroll and complete the program again.
