When Jayna Morrison crossed the stage to receive her parchment for completing Lakeland College's esthetician program, it marked the end of a two-year journey.

“It's been a great experience for me,” says the 20-year-old. “Every day I pushed myself out of my comfort zone.”

Prior to enrolling in the one-year program, Morrison met with the esthetician program chair to see if accommodations were available as she has spina bifida.Jayna Morrison, graduate of the Lakeland College's esthetician program

“I knew a one-year workload would be too much, so they agreed to make it a two-year program,” says Morrison. “They were completely understanding. If I ever needed a place to put my medical supplies or if I was at home sick, they were always understanding of where I was coming from.”

In her first year of studies, Morrison mastered manicures, pedicures, waxing and tinting, as well as worked in the student-led spa at the Lloydminster campus. The following year, Morrison studied facials, massage and other components of the program, and continued to hone her skills with clients in the spa.

“It was awesome to work in the spa,” she says. “It's nice to be able to have an instructor close by if you need help and working with the clients is great, especially seeing how happy they are with the services you've provided.”

Prior to graduating, Morrison was able to further her studies by completing additional education in gel nails and makeup artistry through Lakeland's continuing education department.

“With this line of work, you're always learning. This industry is always changing with new trends.”
