The world of wellness was unleashed to the Lakeland College community through the 2019 Wellness Fair and a new student talent showcase on March 11.

In the Servus Credit Union Hospitality Centre, hairstyling and esthetician students and their models walked the first Look Good, Feel Good Hairstyling and Esthetician Transformation Showcase runway.

The event was an opportunity for students to draw on the lessons they've learned throughout the year and share their expertise, creativity and talent in front of industry representatives, and their Lakeland instructors and peers.

“We did a before and after transition of a model to show off the skills we've learned so far and it's been a funopportunity. My model is a stay at home mom so I wanted to help her feel more than a stay at home mom. I did a simple curl for texture and dimension to show off the highlights we put in her hair, and her make-up was a natural application,” says Amy Rosendahl, a hairstyling student.

Rosendahl's model was one of 10 who was paired with both a hairstyling and esthetician student. She added it was a great collaborative experience to have during her education.

In addition to the showcase, esthetician students earned more hands-on, practical experience by offering manicures during the Wellness Fair. Student Allie Granger says they were happy and excited to participate and work on their skills beyond the student-led spa.

“Getting the extra experience of working with walk-in clients in a scenario that requires us to work effectively and efficiently was one of the main benefits,” Granger explained.  Ahead of her manicure quota, a program requirement, Granger added that any hands-on opportunities like this are always positive for any student.

Students and faculty with Lakeland's School of Human Services, Lloydminster Students' Association, LGBTQ+ Club, and Student Employment were also a part of the Wellness Fair. The free annual event featured more than 30 organizations with interactive displays and demos and activities and presentations that promoted mental, physical, financial, spiritual and occupational wellbeing.
