Hands-on learning opportunities continue for Lakeland College's hairstyling and esthetician students when their public clinics start again this month.

While only Lloydminster campus staff and students can book appointments as the college is closed to the public at this time, the opportunity for the students to apply their knowledge and skills in a realistic work setting is still beneficial for their soft and technical skills.

“I'm looking forward to connecting with people and learning how to do a proper consultation. For a lot of us, this is our first time being able to talk with someone in-person and learning how to understand what the client could want from us,” says Rae-Lynn Sardoff, a hairstyling student.

Sardoff will be applying her skills at the Lloydminster campus hair salon every Tuesday in January and February, from noon to 8 p.m. Services include cuts, shampoos, styles, conditioning treatments, and scalp massages. Colouring and perm services will be available in March.

“I'm looking forward to getting more experience, cutting different types of hair. We're lucky at the Lloydminster campus because we have a diverse population, so it's a great opportunity to work with different hairstyles and textures,” Sardoff says.

Public clinics in the campus spa are Mondays and Wednesdays, 3 to 7 p.m. throughout January and February. Services include pedicures, manicures, gel polish, waxing, tinting, facials and relaxation massage. Hot stone massage will be available at a later date.

&COVID-19 precautions and protocols are in place to ensure the health and safety of staff and students. Workstations are six feet apart and have partitions between them, masks will be worn by staff, students and clients, and each station is clean and disinfected before and after each client. Prior to arriving on campus, staff and students must complete a daily assessment.

“Lakeland College is honestly doing the best that they possibly can. Our teachers are working hard to make sure that we can learn everything that we need to go into this field, and they're doing an awesome job at it. I feel like I have learned so much this year already and we're not even finished.”
