Lakeland College accounting instructor and accounting major program head Janey Decker has been recognized with the 2026 CPA Education Foundation Teaching Award, celebrating her outstanding contributions to accounting education and student success.
The award honours exceptional educators from post-secondary institutions across Alberta
and the University of Saskatchewan who demonstrate excellence in teaching, curriculum
development and service to students.
A chartered professional accountant (CPA) with experience in both public practice and industry accounting, Decker brings extensive expertise in taxation, financial reporting and client service into the classroom. Her teaching approach emphasizes immersive learning, helping students connect accounting theory to real-world professional practice.
“Janey’s commitment to student success and hands-on learning creates an exceptional educational experience,” says Angela Minish, dean of Lakeland’s School of Business and Energy. “She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure students graduate with the technical knowledge, professional confidence and practical skills needed to thrive beyond the classroom in the accounting profession.”
Decker regularly incorporates practical, work-integrated learning opportunities into her courses, including case-based projects, simulated client scenarios and community tax clinics. Through the volunteer tax clinics she organizes each spring, students gain valuable real-world experience preparing tax returns for real clients while providing an important service to the community. In 2026, 125 tax returns were completed by Decker’s students.
She also leverages strong industry connections to bring practicing accounting professionals
into the classroom, exposing students to current industry trends, career pathways
and workplace expectations.
As program head, Decker has played an important role in ensuring Lakeland’s accounting curriculum remains aligned with evolving industry standards and CPA competencies. Her collaborative leadership and forward-thinking approach continue to strengthen the student learning experience and prepare graduates for successful careers.
“I truly appreciate the recognition. I am very proud to be both a CPA and an instructor at Lakeland College,” says Decker. “I look forward to continuing the great work we are doing in the business department as we prepare students for further education and successful careers in the workforce. We are fortunate to work with such outstanding students, and I am excited about what the future holds.”
