Kylie Field and her medalAfter spending 10 years as a teacher, Kylie Field returned to the classroom with a new goal: becoming an environmental professional.

The decision brought her to Lakeland College, where she embraced new challenges, pursued opportunities outside the classroom and rediscovered her passion for learning. Those experiences have earned Field the President’s Medal as this year’s Vermilion campus recipient.

“I was overwhelmed when I heard I would be receiving this award,” says Field. “I felt an immense sense of gratitude for the recognition, and I felt proud of myself for the choices and sacrifices I had made over the past two years.”

The President’s Medal recognizes students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership and involvement in campus life. For Field, the honour is a reflection of the work she put into building both her knowledge and her connections during her time at Lakeland.

“This recognition means a lot to me,” she says. “I worked hard to apply myself and do my best.”

Following a decade of teaching, Field was ready to pursue a career in environmental sciences. Small class sizes and outdoor lab opportunities sealed Field’s decision to enrol in Lakeland’s environmental sciences diploma program and major in land stewardship and conservation.

While adjusting to life as a student again, Field remained committed to helping others succeed. One of the most rewarding parts of her Lakeland experience was participating in peer tutoring and Botany tutorials, opportunities that allowed her to draw on her teaching background.

“I miss teaching, and these experiences gave me the opportunity to help other students find success in areas they were struggling,” she says.

Outside of the classroom, Field served as vice-president of the Outdoor Recreation Club, helping organize activities for students interested in spending time outdoors.

“Being outside is important to me and I was happy to be able to help plan activities for other students wanting to have more outdoor experiences,” she says.

Throughout her studies, Field relied on the support of family and instructors. She credits her parents for encouraging her decision to return to school and helping her stay focused on her goals.

“They understood my school-first mindset and helped out whenever they could,” she says. “Even if it was something as simple as a good visit with some laughs.”

She also speaks highly of her instructors, whose support helped her navigate challenges and deepen her understanding of the material.

“I am probably known as the student with many questions,” she says. “My instructors always welcomed my questions with patience and kindness.”

Looking back, Field says her time at Lakeland helped her grow both personally and professionally.

“I’ve grown in my ability to step out of my comfort zone,” she says. “Lakeland has offered me opportunities to meet new people, take on new challenges and even face some of my fears.”

Field will continue her studies this fall in Lakeland’s bachelor of applied science: environmental management program, where she looks forward to expanding her knowledge and taking on a practicum project.
