Prepare to be an electrical apprentice with Lakeland's pre-employment program.
In 16-weeks, you’ll learn skills and grow in knowledge through classroom and lab work in our Trades Centre.
You cover the same technical material as a first-year apprentice:
- electrical theory and fundamentals
- Canadian electrical code
- control circuits
- splicing
- alarm systems
- electric hand tools
- trades mathematics
- safety training
Once you’re finished with your classroom instruction, you could be eligible to write the 1st period Alberta apprenticeship exam.
Then, apply your skills and build industry connections during a 120-hour work placement.

Continue your learning
You are eligible to write the 1st year Alberta Apprenticeship first year electrician exam if:
- you have minimum 65% standing in program requirements
- 90% or better attendance record
If you want to be a journeyperson electrician, you'll have 3 more apprenticeship technical training periods (classroom instruction) as well as the minimum on-the-job hours. All your classroom training can be taken at Lakeland College. See the electrical apprentice page.
Once you've been a journeyperson for 3 years, you can become a Master Electrician. Lakeland offers a certification course to prepare you for the exam.
Or, if you have a valid Alberta Journeyperson certificate, you can also work toward red and blue seals - more info on the electrical apprentice page.
