Frequently Asked Questions
HS 161 Nail Care includes gel polish application.
If you are interested in artificial nail technology, this is offered as a continuing education course. For more information, visit our Health and Wellness Continuing Education page.
You aren't a journeyperson yet. Our certification provides you with all technical training you need.
You'll need to do another 2,800 hours of work under a journeyperson hairstylist, then write the interprovincial (Red Seal) exam.
Many students find they will build a clientele as soon as they start to work in the public clinics.
Everything you will need to successfully complete the program is included. The contents are of good quality and consistent with the industry.
Being a full-time student means you have access to our facilities such as the learning commons, recreation, athletics, library services, residence, free parking, cafeteria and our bookstore.
In the esthetician and hairstyling programs, you are responsible for day-to-day operations at the spa and salon.
On our Lloydminster campus, all the programs include lab space:
- Health care aides use the nursing labs
- Estheticians train in a functioning spa
- Hairstyling students train in a functioning salon
All the programs will likely use traditional classrooms for some of their theory classes.
Classes are scheduled Monday to Thursday. There are three practicums throughout the program. Practicum shifts can be scheduled days, evenings, and weekends depending on your placement.
Yes, mandatory program requirements are:
- First Aid and CPR level C
- WHMIS
- Clear Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check submitted no earlier than 3 months prior to the start date of the program
- MMR – two doses regardless of when you were born
You will be working in an environment where there is potential exposure to blood or bodily fluids, therefore it is strongly recommended that all your immunizations be kept up to date:
- Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis- dates of primary series and one dose over the age of 18, regardless of past immunization history
- Varicella - History of chicken pox disease. If no history, then a positive varicella titre
- Rubella - Date of Rubella vaccine or positive Rubella Titre
- Tuberculin Test - Annual One or Two step skin testing, unless known positive. Also known as Mantoux.
- Hepatitis B: Series of three doses must be started before registration
- Hepatitis B Titre: Done 1-6 months after the third dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine
- Polio - Dates of Primary Series
- Flu vaccine
- COVID-19 vaccine - 2 doses
All Health & Wellness programs are full-time.
Yes, all Health & Wellness programs will have the opportunity to practice skills in a practicum setting.
Estheticians are trained to work in spas performing services such as pedicures, manicures, facials, waxing and spa massage.
In addition to these services, Clinical Estheticians are trained to work in medi-spas performing services such as microneedling, dermaplaning, hydrafacial, laser services and chemical peels.
