The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) gives high school students the chance to start their career journey early. RAP combines classroom learning with real-world, paid work experience in a skilled trade.

RAP offers students:

  • Hands-on experience: Students work part-time during high school with a certified journeyperson in their chosen trade.
  • High school credits: Hours worked count toward both high school graduation and apprenticeship training.
  • Head start in their career: Students begin building their apprenticeship hours and skills before they even graduate.
  • Earn while they learn: Students are paid for their work, gaining financial independence alongside valuable skills.

RAP is a great opportunity for students who:

  • enjoy learning by doing.
  • are interested in a career as an automotive service technician, carpenter, electrician, heavy equipment technician, parts technician, steamfitter-pipefitter or welder.
  • want to explore a career path while in high school.

How it works

  • Students find an employer who is willing to take them on as a RAP apprentice.
  • With support from their school, they register as an apprentice through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).
  • Students split their time between school and work, balancing academics with practical training.
  • Students can continue as full-time apprentices after graduating.
