Our most common questions are split into four groups for your convenience:
Applying to Lakeland
There are different processes depending on what you plan to take. Check out our applying at Lakeland page for more information on:
- apprenticeship registration
- continuing education
- foundational learning
- credit programs
Due to the volume of applications, we will only evaluate admission documents for current applicants. We cannot complete preliminary evaluations for individuals considering an application.
All admission requirements are available for each program on their specific page. Find your program using our program finder and scroll to the requirements section.
Lakeland College does not have a mature student policy.
However, for our credit program offerings, in the event that an applicant is not able to provide their high school transcript or is missing/deficient in the course(s) required, they may still gain admission through our special admission process by completing an entrance test in the academic course(s).
Successful completion of the entrance test(s) will provide consideration for admission. Entrance test results are valid for two years.
Please note that some program exclusions apply.

Before you're a student
You don't need to purchase any version. We provide you with the full version of Microsoft Office 365 Plus, including:
- Word
- Excel
- PowerPoint
- Outlook
- Teams
- OneDrive
Even better, you may install Office 365 on up to 5 devices for your personal use, as long as you're a Lakeland student. This is one of the benefits included with your student edu email.
Beyond essential items like pens and notebooks, your program may require specific supplies and textbooks. These lists will be provided for credit programs on or before registration day.
You will receive an email when the supply list and textbook information is available. It will include a link to our website where you can find the specific information for your program and whether it's required for the first day of class.
Please note that depending on the program, some lists may not be finalized until just before the semester begins.
All textbooks and most supplies are available through our campus store. You can purchase in-person or online. If you have questions about ordering, please contact the campus store.
You may see ads on campus and online from students who are selling their books.
This is an option but please be aware that there may be an updated or newer edition required for the course.
Classes and registration
Full-time students and part-time students are defined by their course load.
Full-time status is required for most awards, scholarships and bursaries, to participate in college athletics, or to stay in residence.
Whether you are full-time or part-time also determines what type of government student aid you are eligible for and how you will apply for your funding.
To maintain full-time student status, you must be enrolled in at least 60% of the required courses for your program in each semester. In many programs, this means that you are enrolled in at least 3 of the 5 required courses scheduled in a term to be considered full-time. If you take less than 60% of the course load in your program, then you are considered a part-time student. Make sure you are familiar with what your program’s full course load is.
While most classes are delivered between 8:30 am and 6:30 pm, a student with a 100% course load could expect to be in class about 30 hours per week at most. This can vary from program to program and from season to season depending upon your field of study. A few of our full-time programs are delivered in the evening and on weekends, and some programs have evening classes.
If you’re interested in part-time study, you should speak with one of our enrolment specialists about the particular program you’re interested in.
Check out specific program pages on the website for their program dates.
Most programs do get Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day and Easter off when the College is closed.
We've even added dates for the next couple of years, so if you're a returning student, you'll know when classes start including before and after Christmas. Also included are deadlines for dropping and adding courses.
Dates can change, so we do recommend checking our website regularly for updates.
All new students will have their pictures taken on registration day or during early bird orientations the week prior to registration day. Returning student ID Cards are reactivated so returning students do not need a new picture or card.
The ID picture is for your Student Identification card and may be collected and used by departments for other purposes such as class photos.
Your ID card can be used for the following:
- library services
- printing
- access the recreation facilities on the Vermilion campus
- attend Students’ Association activities
- get discounts at local businesses
Lost or broken card replacement fee is $20. Replacements can be requested in person in either Student Services (SS) office.
Your student ID number is important to remember, as some instructors post grades by ID number. Final grades are available on My Lakeland and some results are also posted on D2L.
Many events occur on Registration Day.
All new and returning students must attend a program orientation. This is mandatory.
You will learn about campus services and how they can help you succeed. You will need to be ready to get down to business, as some instructors are ready to start that first day.
We encourage you to learn more about our program options and campuses.
Not all of these are about coming to visit, but we highly recommend coming for a tour.
Here's what else to put on your list:
- make early contact with the college
- find your classrooms ahead of time
- schedule an appointment with an enrolment specialist. They can answer questions, book a tour and help you all the way to registration day
- book an appointment with an accessibility coordinator to get the ball rolling on accommodations
- participate in enrolment events such as Open House
- attend information sessions
If you can't tour campus, check out our virtual tours to get a sense of what each campus is like.
Other questions
Lakeland does offer some online and blended learning options. Delivery methods can vary by program and course.

Once you have been offered admission to Lakeland, you can fill out a transfer credit form to have it assessed for transfer credit.
At Lakeland College, we'll consider transfer credit from accredited post-secondary institutions and on a case-by-case basis from non-accredited institutions.
Some of our programs may have a residency requirement, meaning you may only get credit for some courses because you have to take a certain amount of credits at Lakeland in order to earn your certificate, diploma or applied degree.
Transfer credit may not be granted for work completed more than seven years prior to the date of the request. It will be awarded for equivalent credit course work if the final course grade is equivalent to the graduating GPA grade (this is a C grade in most programs).
If you attend a college or university in Alberta, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories or Saskatchewan, you may also want to check out the applicable online transfer guides available from the Alberta Council on Admissions and Transfer.
Lakeland's Prior Learning Assessment policy does not include evaluating admission requirements. Once you meet admission requirements for your program and are offered a seat in the program, you may apply for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition of Advanced Credit.
Lakeland College will assess and recognize prior learning — knowledge and skills — associated with educational experience and training directly related to your program of study.
If you're a Canadian or permanent resident, the assessment includes:
- transfer credit
- course substitution
- prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR)/advanced credit (AR)
If you're an international student, only transfer credit and course substitution are available to you.
My Lakeland is our online service for you to access your personal information in a safe and secure manner.
This includes application details, course registration, grades, tuition tax receipts and fee payments. It also allows you to update your personal details like your address and phone number.

Once you've been enrolled, your schedule will be available in My Lakeland on the View my classes tile.
For some of our online programs, you will need to self-register and enrol in courses. You can expect an email from the Office of the Registrar beginning one week before registration for the term opens. It will include instructions on how to self-register and pay tuition using My Lakeland. Registration open and close dates are listed on the program page under the Important Dates section.
Lakeland offers on-campus residences in Lloydminster and Vermilion.
When you accept your offer of admission, you will be emailed a link to apply for residence using the online application system. Contact the Residence Office directly for information on Lakeland’s residence accommodation, rates, virtual tours and any other questions. It's recommended to apply for residence early, as on campus accommodations tend to fill quickly.
You may also consider off campus accommodations. We maintain a list of off-campus housing options, but you can also check Kijiji or local Facebook pages. For example, “Vermilion Rents – Rooms and Houses” can be a good source of rental property information around the Vermilion campus.
You aren't doing anything wrong.
D2L is used by most programs — on campus students and online courses, dual credit, continuing education, pesticides certification, and even most of our trades apprenticeship programs. Note: if you are enrolled in carpentry or electrical, you will be using the Mobius system.
D2L is our learning management system. Instructors may upload course notes, provide spaces for assignments, quizzes, grades and other important resources for the class, so you'll get access once you start courses.
Visit the equine centre page to find the costs and application for boarding your horse. The rodeo club manages the barn and priority is given to rodeo team and club members.
Rent is due at the start of the semester.
To ensure all students have insurance coverage, the health and dental plan charges are mandatory fees that must be paid upfront by students.
If you have other insurance coverage, you can opt out on My Student Plan's website. You have 30 days from the start date of your program to opt out. When you've successfully opted out, you'll receive a refund from the health and dental plan provider.
