Get accredited steam time through Lakeland College to complete your power engineering certification.

You’ll use our 4th class steam lab at the Lloydminster Cenovus Energy Power Labs. Check out a virtual tour of the Cenovus Energy Power Labs to see where you'll be learning.

The lab is approved by the Alberta Boilers Safety Association as meeting the firing time requirements and practical experience to gain full certification.

Note: It's your responsibility to ensure you meet the requirements of the appropriate provincial safety authority.

This 200 hour course is a combination of hands on training in a lab setting and on-site assignments.  

To pass, you must achieve the pass grade and successfully complete the necessary course requirements including the following:

  • 200 hours in the Lakeland College steam lab
  • Completion of each lab lesson assignments and quizzes as determined by the course instructors

Course Requirements:

A minimum of a 4th Class Power Engineering Part A or Part B theory course from a recognized and ABSA approved school must be subitted at the time of registration. This must be emailed to energyconed@lakelandcollege.ca at the time of registration.

If students have completed an earlier edition (i.e. 2.5 edition), confirmation provincial approval to write the Part A exam (i.e. ABSA) is required.

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they meet the certification requirements for the appropriate provincial safety authority.

Course length: 5 weeks
Total hours: 200 hours
Cost: $5,500 (Course fees are due in full at the time of registration)
Delivery: onsite at Lakeland College's Cenovus Energy Power Labs, Lloydminster campus
Course schedule: Monday – Friday, 7 am to 4 pm
Prerequisite: Students are required to provide proof of completion of an approved post-secondary power engineering 4th class course at the time of registration to energyconed@lakelandcollege.ca  The minimum requirement is successful completion of the 4th Class Power Engineering Part A or Part B theory course.

You will receive detailed information about supplies and requirements before the course starts.

Notice: Pan Global Training Systems, our primary provider of textbooks and learning materials, has announced its decision to wind down operations over the next three months. The Lakeland College bookstore has purchased the equivalent of 70% of our student capacity. We expect this order to arrive mid-May. Next course: May 5 - June 6, 2025, Mon-Fri, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Lloydminster Campus. 

Class will be held on the long weekend Monday, May 19, 2025.

Students will be required to complete safety requirements as well as the Lakeland College WHMIS course prior to the start of this lab course. 

There are a limited number of seats in this lab course.

A minimum number of students is required to run this course. Students will be notified by Lakeland College if a course cancellation is required.

Upon successful completion of the 4th Class Power Engineering Steam Lab, you will receive completion documentation including a Lakeland College completion letter.

Lab attendance is mandatory. Students are required to attend allscheduled power labs.

If a make-up lab is absolutely required, the cost for make-up labs is minimum $200/hour up to $1000/day. 

Students can make-up a total maximum of 36 hours.  If students miss more than 36 hours, they will fail the course.  
Lab make-up time cannot be guaranteed. Lab make-up time must be approved and paid for in advance.  *Lab make-up fees are subject to change. 

Note: Lab class will be held on the Monday of May long weekend. 

If you are registered and accepted into a scheduled steam lab course at the Lloydminster campus, Lakeland College residence rooms may be available.  Please call the Lakeland College Residence office directly 780 871 5414.

Yes, all students that will be attending the steam lab course will need to complete the Lakeland College WHMIS course prior to the start of lab class.  A WHMIS course link will be sent to you by email prior to the course start date.

100% refund less $500 if refund request is received a minimum of 60 days prior to start date.

100% refund less $2500 if refund request is received 30 – 59 days prior to start date.

No refund request is received less than 30 days prior to the lab start date.

All withdrawal and refund requests must be made in writing to  energyconed@lakelandcollege.ca. A receipt will be sent to you. Note: Not showing up to class does not constitute withdrawal. 

Students in the steam lab course will be provided with access to the D2L Desire to Learn online learning portal.   Announcements and reminders are also posted here throughout the course. Students are encouraged to have access to a computer with an internet connection.
