Fired Process Heater Operator is a specialized certification related to thermal liquid power plants.

Fired process heater operatorWhen you complete the training and examinations, you will be able to supervise:

  • a power plant that uses thermal liquid under pressure of a blanketing gas, not exceeding 700 kPa between 20 kW to unlimited kW
  • a power plant that does not produce steam and that uses thermal liquid under pressure of a blanketing gas, not exceeding 700 kPa or a water-glycol mixture with a minimum of 40% glycol between 20 kW to unlimited kW
  • a thermal liquid heating system plant between 250 kW to unlimited kW

About the course

This course is offered between August - June. Choose the course session that works best for you.

This course begins on the 20th of each month. Register by the 15th of the month that you wish to begin.

The Fired Process Heater Operator course is self-paced, self-directed, fully online and live attendance times are not required.

You will have up to five months to complete this course. A one-time course extension is available for the Fired Process Heater Operator online course.

This course is fully online. There are:

  • 30 modules
    • includes basic math, elementary thermodynamics, combustion, legislation, piping and valves, thermal liquid heating systems, fired heater parts and fittings, operation, safety, and pressure, temperature, flow and level measurement.
  • 30 quizzes
  • 7 tests
  • 1 midterm (must be proctored)
  • 1 final examination (must be proctored)

Proctored exams

  • You will require an exam proctor for the midterm and final examinations. Exams can be written with an approved proctor in your area.
  • Your proctor must be approved before the exams. A minimum of five business days (excluding weekends and holidays) is required for proctor confirmation and exam set up.

After the course

You will be emailed a Lakeland College course completion letter after you successfully complete the course.

Once you have successfully completed the course and have your completion letter, you are ready to challenge the ABSA exam.

Follow these steps:

  2. This page also includes a link to form AB-66. Download this form.
  3. The application included verifying your work experience.
  4. Also include your Letter of Completion with your application.

Please note:

  • There is a fee to write the ABSA exam.
  • ABSA recommends submitting your application in advance of your examination. Please check the ABSA requirements and deadlines.
  • Review the exam and certification requirements at www.absa.ca.
  • If you require a replacement completion letter, there is a form to complete and a $30 replacement fee.

It is your responsibility to ensure you meet the requirements of your province's safety authority.

Course length: 5 months to complete. You may request a one-time 3 month extension if needed. The extension fee is $500.
Cost: $1,340 + student fee; other fees: textbooks and resource materials. NoteFees are subject to change.

Before your course start date, you will receive a welcome email from our registration team. This will contain instructions and login information to access the course content. On your course start date, you will be able to access your course content with a laptop/computer and internet connection. 

You will have up to five months to complete this course; however, you can work as quickly as you wish to complete the required course content. A one-time 3-month course extension option is also available. Please note: A Course Extension must be submitted to energyconed@lakelandcollege.ca at least 14 days prior to your course end date. Fees apply.

This is a self-paced course design; therefore, there are no required live attendance times. You can log in to your course as often as you wish to complete the course content.  

Note: All course content must be completed prior to your course end dates. 

Yes, a midterm and final exam is required for each course. All exams are online. When you are ready to schedule an exam, you will be required to schedule your exam with an approved proctor in your area and submit an exam request. Detailed information will be available in your online course. Exams must be written in a professional setting. 

  1. Schedule an appointment with an approved exam proctor (refer to the proctor requirements). 
  2. Submit your Exam Request with your preferred date/time to energyexams@lakelandcollege.ca. Note: A separate form is required for each exam and forms must be submitted with a minimum of five business days of notice (excludes weekends and holidays). 
  3. A confirmation email with instructions will be sent to you prior to your exam date.

Note: Exam fees are the responsibility of the student.

An exam proctor supervises your exam. They will monitor your exam following the exam requirements. Some examples of suitable proctors are:

  • exam testing agency
  • personnel librarian
  • principal
  • superintendent
  • teacher
  • lawyer
  • accountant

Exam fees may be charged for exam services and are the student's responsibility.

You'll receive access to the course content through our online learning portal. Additional textbooks are required for the course, along with suggested materials to assist you with preparing for the ABSA exam.

You have 5 months to complete this online course. A suggested schedule is provided in your online course. An estimated 3-6 hours per week is suggested to successfully work through the course content. Additional time may be required to prepare for required exams as well as any required provincial exams.

Once you have successfully completed the QTRA 350 Fired Process Heater Operator course, you'll receive a Lakeland College completion letter. This letter will be sent to you by email within 10 business days of successful course completion.

If you require a replacement completion letter, fill out our Request for Replacement form and submit it to conedregistration@lakelandcollege.ca.
